A Designs Job

Design has a job, that job is different for every product, project, business, campaign, logo, etc. The job of design is not to make you like the design; zero non-designers look at packaging and say, “hey, that’s a good design!”

The job of design is to create action, pick up a magazine that looks interesting, recognize a symbol you saw somewhere before, trigger an emotional response, entice you to click, communicate a message, etc.

It’s the graphic designers job to assign design its job. He or she needs to understand the desired action, the audience, and how to technically and tastefully create a visual using appropriate photographs, shapes, color, and type for it all to work like it should. It’s a bit like brain surgery.
